Meb Keflezighi came up short in his effort to win back-to-back Boston Marathons, but his 8th place finish is pretty amazing, considering he reportedly threw up five times.

In an interview with WBZ-TV’s Steve Burton, Keflezighi said the crowd helped him through a tough finish.

“I stopped five times during the race after mile 23,’’ Keflezighi said. “I threw up.’’

“You threw up during the race?’’ WBZ-TV sports anchor Steve Burton asked.

“Five times, oh yeah,’’ Keflezighi said.

Despite the repeated stops, Keflezighi sprinted the last stretch of the race so he could catch up to Hilary Dionne, an elite women’s runner from nearby Charlestown.

“I had to sprint to catch her and make that happen,’’ Keflezighi told WBZ-TV. “I was hurting pretty bad, I was very emotional on Boylston Street, crying.’’
