On April 15, 2013, Rebekah Gregory was standing at the finish line when the bombs went off. After multiple operations, she lost her left leg in November 2014, one of 16 people to lose a limb as a result of the Boston Marathon bombing.

Upon finishing the race, Gregory reportedly said, “I took my life back today,’’ echoing the sentiment of a widely shared pre-race Facebook post this morning.

Gregory had originally planned to run the entire marathon, but her doctor told her that she would cause more damage to her not-yet-healed leg if she attempted the entire race.
