First U.S. RunBase Opening Near Boston Marathon Finish Line
Adidas, the Boston Athletic Association, and Marathon Sports are teaming up to bolster the city’s running community with a resource center for runners right near the Boston Marathon finish line.
The B.A.A. announced on Monday the launch of RunBase, a new home for the Marathon and all things running. The 2,000 square foot location will include exhibits and memorabilia spanning the first 119 years of the Boston Marathon, including jackets, race bibs, medals, trophies and more, while visitors will be able to simulate every foot of the 26.2 mile course on their official treadmill. Results from every person who has run the Boston Marathon will be available in a searchable database. Premium Adidas footwear will also be exclusively sold at the site.
“RunBase is a one-of-a-kind resource for runners based in and traveling to Boston,’’ Mikal Peveto, global director of running innovation at Adidas, said in a statement. “Adidas is taking its partnership with the Boston Athletic Association to the next level with the help of Marathon Sports to let runners experience the best of our brand and the spirit of the greatest race year-round.’’
Boston’s RunBase will also include full locker rooms and shower facilities for runners to meet and train together from the site, while expert speakers and elite runners are expected to visit the location. The B.A.A. hopes that the site will become a year-round hub for Boston Marathon and other runners in the Boston area.
“We’ve already cultivated a community of like-minded runners through our heritage,’’ B.A.A. executive director Tom Grilk said. “The experience expands the way we serve and interact with runners while providing world class product in an environment that celebrates the Boston Marathon’s past and present.’’
Located at 855 Boylston Street and opening in mid-April, the Boston Marathon RunBase will be the first of its kind in the United States, with several other locations operated by Adidas currently open around the world, including Tokyo, Moscow, London, São Paulo and Prague. The Boston site was launched in partnership with Marathon Sports, Inc.
“This is a natural extension of our long-standing partnership with Adidas, which we have enjoyed since 1988,’’ Grilk said. “The Boston Marathon, our club and our community events will come to life at Boston Marathon RunBase year-round for all to see and experience.’’
