Meb Keflezighi Becomes First American Boston Marathon Champion since 1983
Meb Keflezighi became the first American male champion of the Boston Marathon since 1983 Monday, finishing in a time of 2:08:37. That time is a personal record for the 38-year-old Keflezighi and the fastest time ever for an American winner.
Keflezighi held off Wilson Chebet of Kenya, who finished in 2:08:48, and Frankline Chepkwony, who came in third at 2:08:50.
Keflezighi, who came came to the United States at the age of 12, finished second in the men’s marathon at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He won the New York City Marathon in 2009. He finished 5th in the 2010 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:09:26.
The 1983 race was won by Greg Meyer, who had moved to the Boston area in 1978. Meyer ran the race in 2:09:00, at the time the third-fastest time in course history.
