Sports world honors Boston Marathon bombing victims, law enforcement

At the London Marathon and across the world of sports, there have been countless displays of support and sympathy for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15.

At a moving pregame ceremony in the first game at Fenway Park following the bombing and subsequent manhunt for the suspects, David Ortiz delivered a powerful message. “This is our (expletive) city. Stay strong.”

After defeating the Florida Panthers on Sunday, the Boston Bruins gave their game jerseys to members of the law enforcement agencies that aided in the investigation and manhunt for the bombing suspects. Law enforcement officers have been given a hero’s welcome anywhere they’ve gone since capturing the second suspect on Friday.

As the national anthem played prior to the start of a playoff series against the Knicks, Celtics center Kevin Garnett wore a shirt with one of the popular slogans that emerged as the city sought unity in the aftermath of the tragedy.

The Red Sox wore special versions of their home whites for their first two games against the Royals this weekend. The traditional “Red Sox” was replaced by “Boston.”

You did not need to be entered in a major marathon to show support for Boston. Here’ a group of runners in New York’s Central Park included one wearing a Red Sox cap prior to a fun run.

At the Red Sox’ game Saturday, the first pitches were thrown out by Matt Paterson, who aided the injured during the Boston Marathon bombings, Steven Byrne, who was injured during the bombings, and Dick Hoyt and his son Richard Hoyt, who compete in the race every year.

At the Hamburg Marathon in Germany, there were many displays of support. According to the Globe’s Derrick Jackson, who ran in it: “They held a moment of silence, played Sweet Caroline before the start and many people wore Run For Boston bracelets.”

The Yankees and Red Sox are bitter rivals, but the teams put aside their differences in the wake of Monday’s deadly Boston Marathon bombings. Fans entering Yankee Stadium Tuesday saw this tribute to the Red Sox.

At the San Isidro 5K Run in Lima, Peru, a minute of silence was observed by the runners before the race started, followed by a release of white balloons in tribute to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Shane Victorino of the Red Sox sat in the dugout in Cleveland with a jersey paying tribute to those affected by event in Boston prior to the start of the game between the Indians and Sox at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Arsenal and Everton players held a minute’s silence in memory of those killed in the Boston Marathon bombings ahead of the English Premier League football match between the teams at The Emirates Stadium in north London.

Runners stood together during the playing of the national anthem as the Baptist Health South Florida Brickell Run Club honored the Boston victims in Miami. The event drew approximately 1,000 people.

In Miami, runner Michael Zapelini wore a shirt on which he wrote, “Boston 2013 We Will Not Be Divided.’’

The crowd sang along to “Sweet Caroline” in the eighth inning of Tuesday’s game between the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals.

The iconic racing sausages did their thing during the sixth inning of a baseball game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Francisco Giants Tuesday. The Brewers played the iconic “Cheers’’ theme as a tribute to Boston.

The London Marathon takes place this weekend. There is a moment of silence planned in London for the Boston victims.

Fans observed a moment of silence for victims of the Monday bombings at an NHL hockey game between the St. Louis Blues and the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday in St. Louis.

The Montreal Canadiens, bitter rivals of the Boston Bruins, turned down the lights for a moment of silence before their game with the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Washington Capitals held a moment of silence before their game with the Toronto Maple Leafs Tuesday.
