Agony and ecstasy at the 117th Boston Marathon

Agony and ecstasy: Photographers captured the faces of the Boston Marathon runners as they ground through the 26.2-mile race.

The first wave of runners raced across the start line of the Boston Marathon after the Elite Men started at 10 a.m. in Hopkinton.

Ecstasy : Hiroyuki Yamamoto crossed the finish line as the men’s wheelchair winner.

Agony: A runner at Cleveland Circle, the 22d mile of the Boston Marathon.

Ecstasy: Rita Jeptoo of Kenya smiled as she lifted the trophy after winning the women’s division of the 117th Boston Marathon.

Agony: A runner was helped into a wheelchair at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Agony: Lelisa Desisa Benti, right, of Ethiopia took the men’s lead near the finish of the 117th Boston Marathon and went on to win the marathon.
