BC’s Jerry York suffers 2nd detached retina

Boston College coach Jerry York was not behind the bench on Saturday night for his Eagles’ second game of the Hockey East quarterfinals against Vermont and could miss the second weekend of the tournament after suffering a second detached retina of his right eye.

York had already had surgery to repair his first detached retina in early January, and had appeared to be doing well in his recovery. He appeared fine after the fifth-ranked Eagles beat Vermont, 4-2, on Friday night in the first game of their best-of-three series, and had been symptom-free for two months.

But after BC’s team meeting on Saturday morning, York realized something was wrong after experiencing gray vision in the eye, a BC spokesman said. He then sought medical advice. He is scheduled for his second surgery on the eye on Monday morning at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston.

In York’s absence, associate head coaches Mike Cavanaugh and Greg Brown will coach the Eagles. The last time York had surgery, he missed two weekend’s worth of games. If the latest surgery proceeds as that did, that would cost York the semifinals and finals of the Hockey East tournament, as well as regionals for the NCAA tournament, which start on March 29. But as of Saturday, it was unknown when York might be able to return to coaching BC.
