Former Celtics forward Marcus Morris was arrested Sunday in Broward County, Florida on a fraud charge, according to booking records.
Morris, 35, was booked for what police said was a case of “[insufficient] funds check.”
Morris himself has yet to publicly address the matter. His twin brother, Markieff, weighed in on social media.
“The wording is crazy,” Markieff wrote in a post on X. “Damn for that amount of money they’ll embarrass you in the airport with your family. They got y’all really thinking bro did some fraud s***. They could have came to the crib for all that. When y’all hear the real story on this s*** man. All I can say is Lesson learned. Bro will tell y’all tomorrow. This weird s*** gave me a headache. Can’t stop nothin!”
Morris’s agent, Yony Noy, tried to clarify the situation with a statement.
Yahoo Sports’s Chris Cwik got a copy of Noy’s full statement:
“Just so everyone understands this is zero fraud here or whatever crap outlets have said regarding fake checks or whatever the hell,” wrote Noy. “This is due to an outstanding marker with a casino. Apparently if you have over $1,200 they can issue a warrant for your arrest. Absolute insanity!”
Morris was an NBA first-round pick by the Rockets in 2011. His brother, Markieff, was selected one pick ahead of him by the Suns. He eventually played alongside his brother with Phoenix for parts of three seasons. In 2017, Marcus was traded to the Celtics in exchange for Avery Bradley and a second-round pick.
He stayed in Boston until 2019, when he signed with the Knicks. Morris was last on an NBA roster in Sept. 2024 when he was waived by New York. Since then, he has made appearances on ESPN as an NBA analyst.
