The Celtics seem to be hitting their stride just ahead of the playoffs, with Boston closing out March with a 14-1 record — including a perfect 8-0 showing on the road.
And for his efforts in helping Boston settle into a groove before the playoffs, Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for March on Tuesday.
This marks the fourth time that Mazzulla has taken home Coach of the Month honors over his three-year head-coaching career with Boston. He now trails only Doc Rivers (six) for the most Coach of the Month wins in Celtics’ franchise history.
With Boston dealing with injuries to Jayson Tatum and an extended road trip in March, Mazzulla and the Celtics rose to the occasion.
The Celtics boasted the highest net rating in the Eastern Conference in March (11.6), while also setting a new franchise record by going 6-0 on a single road trip for the first time ever.
While Mazzulla’s emphasis on 3-point shooting has routinely led to blowout wins (10 double-digit victories this month), the most encouraging development for Boston as of late has been their defensive buy-in. In March, the Celtics held opponents to just 107.7 points per game (second in the East), while also holding teams to just a 45.2 shooting percentage from the floor (first in the East).
This marks the second straight year where Mazzulla has taken home Coach of the Month honors in March, as he also had the Celtics on a roll entering their eventual run to an 18th championship in June of last year.
