Celtics reportedly ‘don’t quite know’ when Kristaps Porzingis will return from illness

The waiting game continues as to when Kristaps Porzingis will return to the parquet for the Celtics.

Boston’s big man has been sidelined since Feb. 26 due to a viral illness, with Boston hesitant to put a timetable on when the 29-year-old center/power forward is expected to be cleared for game action.

Speaking ahead of Boston’s eventual home loss to the OKC Thunder on Wednesday, ESPN insider Shams Charania noted on “NBA Countdown” that the Celtics may not have any timeline in place because they still have no real clarity on Porzingis’ status.

“The Celtics are really taking it day-by-day with Kristaps Porzingis and this viral illness that he has,” Charania said ahead of Wednesday’s game. “They don’t quite know when he’s going to return. And honestly, they don’t quite know what exactly has led to this viral illness.

“They’re still trying to get to the bottom of what exactly this is. But I am told they’re hoping to have those medical answers here in the next couple of days to see exactly what this is and when he could return to the floor.”

Porzingis took to social media earlier this week to acknowledge that he was dealing with an non-COVID related illness that has lingered for weeks.

“I have been dealing with some viral illness that we haven’t been able to fully identify yet,” Porzingis wrote on X Monday. “I am recovering and getting better. But still working my way back to full strength to help this team. Thanks for support and Im hoping for a healthy return soon.”

Porzingis has now missed seven straight games due to this illness, with his size, post play, and shooting ability missed on a Celtics team that is tough to match up against when he’s healthy and impacting the game alongside teammates like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Porzingis, who was sidelined to start the 2024-25 campaign after undergoing ankle surgery in June, has appeared in 32 games this season with Boston, averaging 18.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 28.9 minutes per game.
