Jaylen Brown celebrates science, sneaker culture during 741 launch party at Museum of Science

Brown shared his passion for fashion, science, and technology on Friday night at the official launch of his 741 performance collection.

Set against a celestial backdrop with touches of Afrofuturism, the beats of booming hip-hop, the buzz of Boston tastemakers, and the anticipation of release, Jaylen Brown formally launched his highly publicized and well-praised 741 sneaker and performance line on Friday night in partnership with the Museum of Science in Boston.

During the opening reception, music pumped, bubbly flowed, and sneakerheads, fashionistas, journalists, athletes, musicians, and local fans milled about. Guests previewed merchandise from the collection — sneakers, hoodies, and both men’s and women’s wear. 

The group then filed into a private auditorium to hear from Brown and his guests, journalist Jazlyn of Jazzy’s World and beloved science educator Bill Nye.

“My name is Jaylen Brown and welcome to 741. Today we’re going to go on a journey … a journey about why 741, what’s the state of the industry, and how we plan on making an impact in the next generation,” Brown told the crowd as part of his opening remarks.

Describing himself as an athlete by trade and scientist at heart, Brown explained how 741 grew from a desire to pursue the unimaginable, a motivation he attributed to the late Kobe Bryant, who, too, dreamed of launching an independent clothing line. 

“My ‘why’ is attributed to Kobe Bryant, the late, great Kobe Bryant,” Brown said. “His motivation, dedication is the reason I picked up a basketball. Before he passed, there were headlines saying he was starting his own brand, that his frustrations grew with the company he was with, and he wanted to start his own in order to give athletes better percentages and better deals. Well, here we are today.”

Remarks continued with Brown educating the audience on his view of the sneaker industry today, blaming bots and artificial metrics for jamming and muddying the work of purely creating and sharing with fans and followers.

“Athletes, influencers, and creators will always be the barometer of society and what’s cool, what’s creative, what’s hot, what’s trendy. That will never change. And now, everybody is starting to see through the artificial metrics,” Brown said, declaring traditional marketing and business practices obsolete, dying out, and making way for new ideas and processes to push forward.

Capping off his speech, rapper and hip-hop star Ferg (dropping the A$ap moniker that had been part of his brand) joined Brown onstage to unveil 741, unlocking the sneaker in the latest colorway, White Noise, which features the signature “orb” design in a bluish green hue that changed color and luminosity. The shoe, the first style in all white, glimmered with the brilliance that only a fresh pair of white kicks newly unboxed can deliver.

Later, in conversation with Bill Nye, Brown explained the meaning behind the orb design, also known as the “Black Moon” on earlier product releases, including the sneakers seen on Brown and teammate Payton Pritchard in recent months.

Nye, who wore a lab coat with the distinctive symbol stitched into the back, asked, “What is the orb? Where did that come from? Whose idea was the orb? And what is the orb orbiting?”

Brown explained his love for knowledge, inclusive of astronomy, astrology, technology, and humanities, saying all these disciplines intersect, correlate, and come to life through the design of 741 and the specific choice of the orb. 

In his answer, he honed in more on the metaphysical influence.

“I love astrology,” Brown said. “So the orb represents, like, a source of life … this represents energy that is captivated through design.”

The discussion between Nye and Brown, skillfully moderated by the young journalist, bridged the worlds of athleticism, fashion, design, innovation, and entrepreneurship. 

By hosting this once-in-a-lifetime launch in a renowned institution like the Museum of Science, Boston, Brown succeeded in connecting what some, he said, may see as disparate worlds.

“With 741, we make sure that in the branding, the marketing, the strategies, the campaigns that science, physics, astrology, and astronomy are all embedded within the DNA,” Brown said. “The goal is to combine science and engineering with design, fashion, fun, and learning.”
