Celtics pick Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman with No. 30 overall pick in NBA Draft
Scheierman, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound sharpshooter, is heading to the defending champion Celtics.
The Celtics selected Creighton wing Baylor Scheierman with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft Wednesday night.
With the final pick of the first round, the Celtics added a 6-foot-6, 205-pound sharpshooter. Scheierman shot 39 percent from 3-point range during his college career. He was a first-team All-Big East selection this past season, averaging 18.5 points and 9 rebounds per game.
Scheierman was a third-team All-American selection by the Associated Press. He’s the first player in Division I men’s basketball history with at least 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists, and 300 3-pointers.
A tall, left-handed shooter with range, Scheierman made a 3-pointer in 48 consecutive games while at Creighton. He played three seasons at South Dakota State before transferring to Creighton for his final two seasons.
Scheierman helped lead Creighton to the Sweet 16 during this past year’s NCAA Tournament, where the Bluejays fell to Tennessee.
Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens noted before the draft that it would be tough for any rookie to break into the rotation right away. With Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Sam Hauser among others on the wings, the Celtics have options at Scheierman’s position.
Still, having too many shooters wouldn’t hurt, and the Celtics can develop Scheierman without the pressure to play him right away. The Celtics made the most 3-pointers in the league last season, and being able to space the floor with outside scoring threats is a priority for coach Joe Mazzulla.
Scheierman, who will turn 24 in September, is on the older side for a rookie. There are questions about how his defense and athleticism will fare at the NBA level. But, he established himself as one of the best shooters in the Big East and could develop into a specialist as his game grows.
The Celtics hold the No. 54 overall pick and the draft is set to continue Thursday night.
