Jaylen Brown takes subtle shot at Stephen A. Smith during Celtics parade
Brown wore a "State Your Source" t-shirt to the parade.
Jaylen Brown wore a black t-shirt that read “State Your Source” to the Celtics’ championship parade on Friday.
The shirt is a reference to a tweet he sent to ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith back in May.
Smith had reported that an unnamed source told him Brown was disliked because of his attitude and that it was also affecting his marketability.
“It’s not so much that he’s underrated, it’s that he’s just not liked because of his, ‘I am better than you,’ attitude,” Smith said during a TV appearance on ESPN. “He knows it. It’s the same reason he is not as marketable as he should be. That’s what an NBA source just sent me.”
Brown responded by publicly asking Smith to state his source. Smith declined to do so.
“First off, that’s not happening. It’s journalism,” Smith said to Brown. “Not revealing sources. Secondly, if you continue to watch the segment, I completely disagreed with them — as did Kendrick Perkins.”
“The point we were actually discussing is how under appreciated you are and why that may be, which is why I read the quote.”
“I even brought up how socially conscious you are, and how that may not be liked, knowing you’re a good brother. Also, that you’re a $300M man and you deserve it. But that doesn’t mean naysayers don’t get heard. That comes with the territory.”
During Friday’s parade, Brown let his attire do the talking. The Finals MVP stuck with his response and put in on a t-shirt. Then he wore it for all the paradegoers to see.
