World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Mavericks fan, gets a little Celtics ribbing at Travelers Championship

“Do I have to answer this question?” Scheffler asked.

Scottie Scheffler is in Connecticut — enemy territory, as a Dallas native — for the Travelers Championship this weekend.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Scottie Scheffler is as accommodating as the next PGA Tour elite golfer when it comes to signing autographs for fans.

The Dallas native and Mavericks fan reached his limit on Wednesday at the Travelers Championship.

“I did get one fan today who asked me to sign a Celtics hat and I told him no, but other than that, not much interaction,” said the No. 1 player in the world with a laugh, asked about whether he’d heard much trash talk since arriving in New England just a couple days after the Celtics handily beat the Mavericks to clinch their 18th NBA title.

Scheffler groaned before the question could be completed about his untimely arrival in Celtics country.

“Do I have to answer this question?” Scheffler asked.

He did say he did not expect to get too much grief over the Celtics’ dominating 4-1 victory.

“Probably not from other golfers — maybe Keegan [Bradley], but probably not, I wouldn’t really expect it out of him.”

Bradley, the Vermont-native who lives near Boston, completely understood Scheffler’s desire to avoid the question.

“I don’t blame him,” said Bradley, the defending champion at Travelers. “I wouldn’t want to either if I was a Dallas fan.

“It’s so fun for me to watch Boston sports, but then to watch it with my family and my kids — now my oldest son, Logan, was into it — and it was really fun to watch him watch the Celtics win,” said Bradley, who said he impressed by the wisdom coming from the mouths of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum afterwards.

“We all in sports can make things into such a big deal, and to hear them say they took a step back this year and sort of let the game come to them, it was fun to hear what they had to say,” said Bradley.

One not-in-Dallas-anymore moment for Scheffler: He was as unimpressed by the current heat wave as he was by the Celtics.

“As far as the heat goes, I’m from Texas so it’s actually cold up here to me,” said Scheffler. “I was a little chilly this morning when I got out there on the course.”
