Everything Derrick White said about his new Samuel Adams ad

"I got to keep the jacket, which is clutch," White said.

Derrick White grew up in Colorado, attended the University of Colorado, and began his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs.

But, he’s quickly become a fan favorite in Boston since the Celtics traded for him in 2022 and he has a new commercial out with Boston-based beer brand Samuel Adams.

In the commercial, White gets a crash course on how to look and sound like a local.

“It was a lot of fun,” White said. “There were good people on the set and it was a lot of fun. A lot of stuff that I didn’t know about Boston. I really enjoyed it.”

There’s a point in the ad when Samuel Adams’s “Your Cousin From Boston” character attempts to teach White about the Boston accent using the following sentence: “My stepdad Larry spent ma’s Keno winnings at the horsetrack.” White was not sure what that meant at the time.

“You know where I’m like, ‘I don’t know what that means’?” White said. “I really did not know what that meant until that day. Even my outfit, I didn’t know that was a typical Boston outfit.”

White wore a flannel shirt, a Carhartt jacket, jeans, and a pair of Timberland boots during the ad.

“I got to keep the jacket, which is clutch,” White said. “That Carhartt is nice.”

White said he has picked up a little knowledge about the Boston accent during his time here and that he works on his own from time to time.

“I told them before that I was practicing my Boston accent, so looking in the mirror,” White said. “There are some simple techniques that I’ve picked up over the years.”

The 60-second spot tested White’s acting skills.

“They sent it to me and were like, ‘Oh, we’re going to go and do this’ and then there was some stuff that we kind of just improv-ed,” White said. “Take over my acting skills and just let it flow.”

White said he appreciates the support from Celtics fans, whom he called the best in the league.

“It’s amazing. I love it here,” White said. “I’m really just thankful and grateful that I get a lot of love from the fans here. We have the best fans. Even on the road, it’s great to go on the court and everyone is cheering for you.”
