Focusing on depth, Jaden Springer arrives to the Celtics just in time to help down the stretch

Just before the clock struck 3 p.m. in Boston on Feb. 8, indicating the NBA trade deadline, Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens made one more move.

After acquiring big man Xavier Tillman from the Memphis Grizzlies earlier that afternoon, Stevens sent a heavily-protected second-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Jaden Springer

Springer was drafted by the 76ers in the 2021 NBA Draft at No. 28. Now, at just 21 years old, the Celtics have the resources and time to develop the young guard.

“He’s an athlete that can play athletically in the playoffs right now,” Stevens said. “But he also has a lot of growing to get better, and he’s committed to that. He’s got a long runway ahead. So we’ll see how this year shakes itself out for him, see how it all fits with the team. But he’s a guy that we believe in.”

This season in Philadelphia, Springer appeared in 32 games, averaging 11.8 minutes, 4.0 points, and 1.8 rebounds. His defensive versatility, specifically on the point-of-attack, makes him an asset to the Celtics’ bench. As they look to give their starters rest through the backstretch of the season, Springer offers a strong relief option for key defenders like Jrue Holiday, Jalen Brown, and Derrick White.

Luckily, that’s a role Springer is enthusiastic about assuming.

“I feel like I can definitely help bring the energy,” Springer said. “I feel like defensively I can help the team. Offensively, I can fit into the system, watching the way they play. It’s just really free-playing, really understanding what they’re trying to get to. I feel like I can help however they need me to, so I’m pretty excited for that.”

While Springer is eager to get on the floor and contribute to the Celtics’ winning record, the team remains focused on developing their young new player. Springer spent last week getting familiar with his teammates and coaches, watching group workouts, and going over film.

Not everyone was a stranger to Springer, however. He reunited with some familiar faces in Boston, namely assistant coach Sam Cassell and player development coach Tyler Lashbrook. The three worked together in Philadelphia, and Springer believes the existing rapport will be an advantage for his adjustment.

The Celtics face off Tuesday night in Brooklyn against the Nets at 7:30 p.m.. Springer remains sidelined with ankle soreness, but with the All-Star break just two games away, Celtics fans could expect to see him suit up later in the month.

“Coming to a team like this, you can’t go wrong,” Springer said. “Especially probably the best team in the league, a bunch of great guys, great organization, and so far I’m loving it here.”
