Derrick White dons Christian McCaffrey’s high school jersey ahead of Super Bowl LVIII
White and McCaffrey grew up in neighboring towns in Colorado, developing a friendship over the years.
Derrick White has a connection to Super Bowl LVIII, even if his home state’s Denver Broncos aren’t playing in it.
The Celtics guard grew up near Christian McCaffrey in Colorado, attending Legend High School in Parker while the NFL star attended Valor Christian High School a couple of towns over in Highlands Ranch.
Ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl, White decided to show his support for McCaffrey. He wore the 49ers star running back’s high school jersey to Sunday’s Celtics-Heat game in Miami.
“Yeah, Colorado kid,” White told NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin when asked if he was rooting for the 49ers. “I’m going for him. Hopefully, he can get it done. I think he’s going to have a big night tonight.”
White, who is a Colorado alum and is a noted Colorado sports fan outside of rooting for the Red Sox, noted that there is another reason to root for the 49ers on Sunday.
“Anytime the Chiefs lose, I’m happy,” White said. “It’s been a rough couple of years, obviously [as a Broncos fan]. Hoping for a good game, but I’m going for the 49ers.”
Sunday wasn’t the first time White opted to rock McCaffrey’s high school jersey to a Celtics game. He wore the McCaffrey’s Valor jersey when the Celtics played the Nuggets in Denver on New Year’s Day in 2023.
As for the Celtics, they’ve had a loose connection to the Super Bowl for a while. Despite the NBA’s usual paltry slate of games on Super Bowl Sunday, the Celtics have played on the day of the NFL’s title game every year since 2009, except for one season. They’ve gone 27-13 all-time on Super Bowl Sunday.
