The Celtics are reportedly acquiring some front-line help prior to Thursday’s trade deadline.
Boston will send two second-round picks to the Grizzlies in exchange for forward/center Xavier Tillman, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The exact picks, per Wojnarowski, will be a 2027 pick (via the Hawks) and a 2030 pick (via the Mavericks).
Update: Boston is also sending 26-year-old Lamar Stevens as part of the trade.
Tillman, 25, has appeared in 34 games for Memphis in the 2023-2024 season, averaging six points in 20.6 minutes per game. The former Michigan State Spartan is in his fourth NBA season, all spent with the Grizzlies. He is known for having a strong capability on the defensive end.
He was originally drafted by the Kings in the second round (35th overall) in 2020 before being dealt to Memphis a day later.
The Celtics, currently 38-12, possess the best record in the NBA. As Boston looks ahead to a likely playoff run, the acquisition of Tillman could help head coach Joe Mazzulla answer any questions regarding the depth of the team’s bench.
Boston also still has time to make additional moves if president of basketball operations Brad Stevens sees an opportunity. The NBA trade deadline is set for Thursday at 3 p.m.
