Jayson Tatum has a theory as to why he was whistled for a foul guarding his Celtics teammate — and Georgia native — Jaylen Brown in Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game.

“We’re in Atlanta,” Tatum said. “They gave him the foul.”

Early in the second quarter, Brown got the ball at the top of the key with Tatum guarding him. Tatum slapped the floor, grinning, and Brown drove hard to his right looking for a layup. He missed, but an indignant Tatum was whistled for the foul.

Brown, who scored 22 points on 8-for-12 shooting in his first All-Star appearance, was asked after the game if he now holds bragging rights over Tatum for the rest of the year.

“Yeah, we got the win,” Brown said. “We definitely got the win. He fouled me when he was on me. We knew how that was going to go. I’ll take the win. I know we got a nice cash prize too. I don’t know if that is for charity. But Jayson fouled me, of course.”

Tatum scored 21 points on 9-for-16 shooting. Last season, in his debut All-Star appearance, he played alongside Kemba Walker. He was asked about playing with Brown at the event this season.

“I thought it was cool,” Tatum said. “I think the difference, last year was my first time. This year was his first time. I was glad he was here.”
