Morning sports update: Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck explained his ‘frustration’ after last season

Wyc Grousbeck’s thoughts on the 2018-2019 Celtics: After the Celtics failed to live up to the immense preseason expectations set for the team a year ago, the disappointment has lingered.

Speaking on WEEI on Tuesday during the ongoing Jimmy Fund Radio Telethon, Celtics majority governor Wyc Grousbeck shared his thoughts on the team’s failure to reach the NBA Finals.

“I will never forget last year,” Grousbeck said. “There’s good years I won’t forget. I won’t let anybody else forget them either, the good years. But last year was a year that was frustrating enough that I’ll never forget it. But I’ll be glad to talk about something else by playing better. The only way to erase some of it is to step forward over the next 5-10 years and do something meaningful. It gives me all the more reason, it gives all of us all the more reason to get back to where we want to be.”

Speaking of the up-and-down season, Grousbeck admitted his frustration over thinking for a moment that the team had gotten past its regular season issues during the early playoff run, only to lose in five games to the Bucks.

“I felt like we had gotten our free pass [from] the stuff that happened in the regular season,” Grousbeck explained. “I actually thought, you win five in a row, you win on the road in Milwaukee pretty handily…I’m sort of thinking, ‘Well OK then.’ And then we lose four straight and get banged out of there, swept out of there. It made it all the worse. So I’ve been frustrated ever since and we’ve made some changes and change has happened to us.”

“We made other changes,” Grousbeck continued. “We went for…we got Kemba Walker, Enes Kanter, we got four real character rookies.”

Grousbeck also praised Gordon Hayward’s offseason work ethic.

“He’s in the Auerbach center 6 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m. every single day, seven days a week,” Grousbeck said. “And he looks unbelievable. So just telling you, I’m loving the team, people are loving team, and we’re hopeful the chemistry will be there.”
