Morning sports update: What Jayson Tatum had to say about the Anthony Davis trade rumors
Also: Bill Belichick ponders whether anyone would buy his hypothetical book.
The Celtics downed the Hornets on Wednesday night, 126-94. Jaylen Brown’s 24 points and 10 rebounds led the way. Boston heads to New York for a Friday night game (7:30 p.m.) against the Knicks.
The Bruins host the Flyers tonight at 7 p.m. And the Patriots continue to escalate their preparations for Sunday’s Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta against the Rams.
Jayson Tatum is focused on what he can control: The Anthony Davis trade rumors continue to swirl, but Jayson Tatum told reporters that he isn’t thinking about any of that.
“My job is to control what I can control,” Tatum said on Wednesday. “I mean, I can’t control what happens, so just gotta go out there and focus on today. Just play the game. See what happens.”
Tatum, the third overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, is potentially one of the players that the Celtics could include in a deal for Davis. However, because of the “Rose Rule,” the Celtics can’t have both Davis and Kyrie Irving on the roster this season, so a hypothetical Davis trade involving Tatum would have to wait until the summer.

Yes, Bill, people would probably buy your book:
“Will you write a book once you retire?”
Bill Belichick: “We’re just trying to get ready for the Rams…would you buy one?” 🤣

On this day: John Elway lost Super Bowl XXII in 1988, as Denver fell to Washington, 42-10. Doug Williams became the first African-American quarterback to start (and win) a Super Bowl. He was named the game’s MVP.
More than a decade later (but also on January 31), Elway would win Super Bowl XXXIII (his second in a row) in what proved to be his final game in the NFL.
