There’s usually no clapping in the press box, no matter how impressive a move LeBron James or any other superstar pulls off. But that doesn’t always extend to the postgame press conference, if the player awes the reporters in their own realm.

On Sunday afternoon, the three-time NBA champion was asked if he had any idea what happened on a specific seven-point sequence during Game 1 between the Celtics and Cavaliers. As a matter of fact, James did have an idea. He had the entire stretch committed to a seemingly photographic memory, and proceeded to lay out in detail what happened. By the time he finished, some of the reporters in attendance were applauding.

Reporter: “Start of the fourth, I think they cut it to 14. I think they scored seven quick ones. Any idea what happened there?”

LeBron James: “What happened? We ran them — the first possession, we ran them down all the way to two on the shot clock. Marcus Morris missed the jump shot, followed it up, they got a dunk. We came back down, we ran a set for Jordan Clarkson, and he came off and missed it. They rebounded it and we came back on the defensive end and we got a stop. They took it out on the sideline. Jayson Tatum took the ball out, threw it to Marcus Smart in the short corner. He made a three. We came back down, missed another shot. Then Tatum came down and went 94 feet, did a Euro step and made a right-hand layup. Timeout.”

After he finished, James paused, palm up, as some reporters began to applaud the performance.

“There you go.”

Editor’s note: The fifth play James refers to as a shot was actually a bad pass in the play-by-play report.
