Doc Rivers revealed he once tried to intentionally get ejected from a Celtics game
There are few instances where a coach will actively seek an ejection.
For former Celtics head coach Doc Rivers, the prospect of Tiger Woods mounting a comeback at Augusta National was enough to lure him off the court. Rivers, who now coaches the Los Angeles Clippers, recently recounted the story of how he tried to intentionally get thrown out of a game:
“When I was coaching the Celtics, I think there were four games left in the season and everything had been wrapped up as far as the playoffs,” he said. “The Masters was on. And at halftime, Danny Ainge tells me that Tiger is making a run. He says, ‘Get thrown out.’ And he’s like, ‘Get thrown out and come back and watch with me.'”
So what did Rivers decide to do? Just exactly that.
“I go out and it’s like the first play in the third quarter, and I go for it, like yelling,” he said. “I want to say it was like Jake O’Donnell, I forget who it was, and he just stares at me. Nothing. And then during the free throw, he comes over and says, ‘I wanna watch it, too.'”
