Danny Ainge’s son Tanner said he doesn’t have much power when it comes to his father’s basketball decisions, but that didn’t stop the current congressional candidate from offering his opinion on one of the Celtics’ potential offseason signing targets.

After an appearance on KSL Newsradio’s “The Doug Wright Show,” Ainge — who is running to replace Rep. Jason Chaffetz — addressed the chatter that fans tend to tie his candidacy to Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward’s free agency status.

“Unfortunately, I’m not sure I have a lot of influence there,” he told Dennis Romboy of the Deseret News. “Ultimately, Gordon is going to make the decision. I hope he stays.”

In May, Ainge previously acknowledged the heightened interest in Hayward, tweeting “Campaign is about economic growth, innovation, fiscal responsibility…but twitter only talking about Gordon Hayward.”

As for whether or not Hayward’s team allegiance will actually impact the race’s outcome, the Utah candidate said he has “no idea.”
