Schedule favors Celtics over Cavaliers the rest of the way

The Celtics woke up Tuesday as the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference. Just as on Sunday, when they’d tied the Cavaliers for the top spot, there was discussion about the significance of an achievement that could be extremely temporary.

The players again insisted they’ve hardly discussed it. Coach Brad Stevens again insisted he’s not worried about it.

But there was also a subtle acknowledgment that it’s sort of cool to be in first for the first time since the 2010-11 season, and that there is no harm in being happy about it, even if only briefly.

“Of course,” guard Avery Bradley said. “Every team in the NBA should want to be the best team in the NBA.

“We’re showing what we can be if we’re playing the right way, if we’re playing the right kind of basketball. That’s an accomplishment to be the first team in the East. We understand that. But at the same time, we understand we could lose it tomorrow.”
