The Celtics lost one of their key players Wednesday night, while the Bruins are hoping to get back two of theirs.

Marcus Smart sprains ankle in preseason finale, may miss opener: With just over 24 minutes left in the preseason, the Celtics lost a key contributor. Just as it appeared Boston may enter the season without any injuries besides the recovering Kelly Olynyk, Marcus Smart turned his ankle when he landed on the foot of the Knicks’ Justin Holiday. Brad Stevens said after the game that the team is hoping it won’t be a long term injury, although Smart left with a walking boot and crutches. (WEEI)

DeAngelo Williams calls out Roger Goodell, Vontaze Burfict over fine: While the Bengals and coach Marvin Lewis defended linebacker Vontaze Burfict’s controversial play against the Patriots, divisional rival DeAngelo Williams of the Steelers went on a Twitter tear condemning his dangerous hits. The Patriots play Pittsburgh this Sunday, so presumably Williams has been watching tape from the New England-Cincinnati game. Burfict received a $75,000 fine but no suspension. (NESN)

The man David Ortiz credits with saving his career is leaving the Red Sox: The coordinator of sports medicine service for the Red Sox, Dan Dyrek, has asked the team not to renew his contract. David Ortiz said that Dyrek was instrumental in helping him extend his career to age-40, and credited the physical therapist with helping him overcome a career threatening Achilles injury in 2012. Dyrek will continue working with another Boston athlete he once assisted, Larry Bird, with the Indiana Pacers. (WEEI)

Patrice Bergeron and Adam McQuaid were both practicing on Wednesday: Despite a 2-1 start, the Bruins are currently 5th in the Atlantic Division but the team should receive a significant boost with the return of Patrice Bergeron. Expected to return for tonight’s home opener against the Devils, Bergeron practiced for the first time yesterday since suffering a lower body injury in practice last week. His return should help a Bruins defense that has struggled thus far. (NESN via Youtube)

World Series-bound Indians return Bautista’s pregame quips after win: Terry Francona, Mike Napoli, Coco Crisp, and ALCS MVP Andrew Miller closed out the Blue Jays last night behind rookie starter Ryan Merritt. After Tuesday’s series extending win, Toronto’s Jose Bautista said Merritt would be “shaking in his boots” to face their lineup in his second major league start. But the rookie southpaw held the Blue Jays scoreless, and Cleveland’s pitchers had some fun on Twitter at Bautista’s expense. (Twitter)

[further context: it was also Bautista’s birthday yesterday]
