The Bruins won their season opener, the Celtics took care of business in a preseason game, and the Patriots added a new player to the injury report.

Celtics’ bench picks up the slack in win over Brooklyn: The Celtics are counting on players like Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier and Jaylen Brown to help them close the gap between the team and Eastern Conference powerhouses Cleveland and Toronto. It’s only the preseason, but the trio tried its best to do just that in the team’s win over the Nets last night. On a night where Isaiah Thomas struggled to shoot, the three players each picked up the scoring load in his stead. (Twitter)

Watch all six Bruins goals from their season-opening win: The game wasn’t as one-sided as the 6-3 score would indicate, but the Bruins beat Columbus to open their season last night thanks to the spectacular play of David Pastrnak, David Backes, and, in particular, Brad Marchand. The three each scored two goals, and well the young defensemen were as shaky as many anticipated, the team surged to a late win behind an offense that thrived even without Patrice Bergeron. Martellus Bennett: New England is a place ‘I feel like I belong’: Tight end Rob Gronkowski had a lot of ‘dang’s’ and ‘damn’s’ when describing the team’s addition at his position, Martellus Bennett, and the latter player is feeling the love. “I’ve felt at home here since Day 1,” Bennett said. “It’s a place I feel like I belong. It’s been fun. I’ve been enjoying it and I am just trying to go out there and win games with my teammates.” Bennett leads the team in touchdowns and receiving yards. (WEEI)

Jamie Collins added to the Patriots’ injury report Thursday: Jamie Collins joined fellow linebacker Dont’a Hightower on the team’s injury report after Thursday’s practice. Collins was listed as a limited participant with a hip injury, although he was a full participant in Wednesday’s drills. On the other side of the ball, Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett, Julian Edelman and LeGarrette blount are also battling injuries, but guard Shaq Mason returned as a full-participant. (WEEI)

Here’s what went wrong for the Red Sox against Cleveland in the playoffs: The Red Sox were stunned by their ALDS sweep this past weekend, and even though Cleveland was missing three of its best players, it was the masterful work of Terry Francona that allowed them to advance. The Boston offense was also a bit unlucky, but Francona had his team throwing the right pitches, aggressively running the bases, and his defensive aligned perfectly to stop David Ortiz and company.
