#TBT: Larry Bird stole the ball 29 years ago

"There's a steal by Bird"

Larry Bird’s entire career consisted of many clutch plays, but one of his most famous came on this day in the 1987 Eastern Conference Finals. Boston Globe Archives

Twenty nine years ago, Larry Bird pulled off one of the most famous defensive plays in NBA history.

With the Celtics down one point with five seconds to go in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Pistons Hall of Fame point guard Isiah Thomas attempted a quick inbounds pass to center Bill Laimbeer when Larry Legend came out of nowhere into the passing lane to snatch the ball out of the air.

His momentum looked like it would carry him out of bounds, but Bird was able to gather himself on the baseline and find Dennis Johnson for the last-second layup to give the Celtics a 108-107 Game 5 victory.

The Celtics went on to win the series in seven games, advancing to the NBA Finals for the fourth year in a row before being defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in six.
