Isaiah Thomas says he wants to play until he’s 40

The Celtics guard even vows to change his "fast food everyday" diet to get there.

PHOENIX, AZ - FEBRUARY 23: Isaiah Thomas #4 of the Boston Celtics is congratulated by Jae Crowder #99 after scoring against the Phoenix Suns during the second half of the NBA game at US Airways Center on February 23, 2015 in Phoenix, Arizona. Isaiah Thomas has only played five seasons in the NBA. But the 27-year-old Boston Celtics point guard is already mapping out a lengthy career more than a decade into the future.

Per ESPN, Thomas says he wants to still be playing in the league when he’s 40 years old. And this offseason, he said he plans to change his diet to put in place a foundation for his career.

“I want to change my diet, eat the right way, eat more healthy to prolong my career,” Thomas told Sirius XM Radio, while representing the Celtics on Tuesday at the NBA Draft Lottery. “I want to try to play until I’m 40. That’s my goal.”

Thomas first mentioned his intention to play until he’s “at least 40” during his end-of-season exit interview following the Celtics’ first-round playoff loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

“I’m hurting,” he said. “I’m 5-9, I’m not supposed to be here. … This summer is about taking care of my body and transforming it and eating great and getting enough rest.”

Following the exit interview, Thomas acknowledged his current diet has not been Tom Brady-esque.

“I do not eat good,” he said, according to CSNNE.com. “I eat like a young guy, a young guy who got a little bit of money, fast food every day. But I’m definitely going to change.”

In his interview with Sirius XM, Thomas mentioned a few NBA legends he looks up to when it comes to taking care of themselves.

“I know guys like Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant, you’ve got to take care of your body,” he said. “That’s half the battle of performing out there on the floor and I think this is a big summer for me to start doing that.”

Considering what Nash and Bryant were dining on in 2013, when the two last played together for the Lakers, the diminutive Celtics point guard might be in for a shock.

Nash’s lunch—a southwest-style grass-fed beef salad with olive oil-based chili-lime vinaigrette and a bone stock-based soup—seems like the opposite of fast food.

Maybe Thomas should try Ray Allen’s organic fast food restaurant first.
