Phoenix Suns general manager wishes he didn’t trade Isaiah Thomas to Celtics

On Feb. 19 of last season, the Phoenix Suns traded point guard Isaiah Thomas to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Marcus Thornton and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2016 first-round pick.

Well, it turns out that was a bad idea, according to Suns general manager Ryan McDonough.

“I think in retrospect trading Isaiah Thomas when we did was a mistake,’’ McDonough said in an interview with 98.7 Arizona Sports. “I think sometimes in the recruitment process things sound better in July than they do in November.’’

Phoenix traded Thomas in his first season with the team after signing him to a four-year, $27 million contract in the offseason, which is turning out to be one of the biggest bargains in the league. Marcus Thornton signed with the Houston Rockets in the following summer, and with the Cavaliers sitting atop the Eastern Conference, the first-round pick they acquired would be 28th overall if the standings hold.

“He wanted more, he wanted a bigger role and I understand why: He’s a talented player,’’ McDonough went on. “In retrospect, we should have carried him into the summer. If there’s one [decision] that stands out, if I could get a mulligan, that’d be it.’’

Meanwhile, Isaiah Thomas made his first All-Star appearance this season as an Eastern Conference reserve and leads the third-place Celtics in scoring with 21.6 points per game, good for 12th in the NBA.

It’s safe to say Danny Ainge won this one.
