The Celtics have spoken with the Houston Rocket about trading for Dwight Howard, according to the New York Daily News. The negotations were just that, however, and did not leave the preliminary stage of discussions, acccording to CSNNE.com.

Howard’s contract extends through the 2016-17 season, but he can opt out of the contract this summer, which could make him a less desirable trade target, as noted by the Daily News. The 7-footer also had back and knee injuries during the course of his career, which could increase the Celtics’ caution as they consider the haul of picks and players required to acquire Howard.

On the 2015-16 season, Howard is averaging 14.4 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, and 1.5 assists in 31.9 minutes a game. His points per game total is the lowest since his rookie season, when he averaged 12.0 points. He has played on three NBA teams in his 11-year career.

Perhaps, targeting Howard is one of the quietly aggressive moves Danny Ainge and Boston are exploring.
