“Walking the dog’’ is a common strategy used by point guards in the NBA to preserve time. By letting the ball roll up the court after an inbounds play, an offensive player can keep the clock, which doesn’t start until he touches the ball, from running.
Nets guard Donald Sloan tried this tactic against Celtics guard Marcus Smart on Monday night in Brooklyn. It didn’t work out.

The Celtics’ second-year guard followed that forced jump ball up with another highlight on the offensive end of the floor in the fourth quarter to help seal a 103-94 win over Brooklyn.
