Reggie Miller would pick Larry Bird over LeBron James

If one assumes career longevity and basketball know-how are linked, then there are few better than Pacers legend Reggie Miller to settle the debate about whether LeBron James or Larry Bird is the all-time greatest small forward.

His choice, when asked in an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show to pick which player he’d build around in his prime?

“I gotta go with Larry Joe,’’ Miller said, calling Bird by his middle name. “I gotta go with Larry Joe. In today’s rules, you can’t touch him.’’

Miller seemed a little hesitant at first, but after hearing Bird’s stats in his age-30, MVP season – nearly 30 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists 2 steals and a block per game – the Hall of Famer reiterated his stance.

“Can I answer that question now? Larry Joe,’’ Miller said. “Larry Joe.’’

As CBS Sports notes, Miller is not without bias in that he played under Bird in Indiana for three seasons. Still, he’s not likely to find many naysayers in these parts.
