Here’s why Amir Johnson knows Boston will love him
Amir Johnson is not Kevin Love. Nor is he Tobias Harris.
Averaging 9.3 points and 6.1 rebounds during the 2014-15 season, Johnson wasn’t the most prolific free agent in this offseason’s pool. So while the newly-signed Celtic may not be the free agent Boston fans had atop their wish list, Johnson is confident he’ll win them over.
“I definitely know the fans will love me,’’ Johnson said at a press conference Monday, per CSNNE. “I’m a team player, I’m a hustler . . . I play hard every game. So I know the fans will definitely love me. I know they’re great fans. I know back in the Detroit days, I’ve seen how rowdy they can get. So I know Boston loves their team for sure.’’
Johnson is already well loved by the Celtics organization. He said Celtics GM Danny Ainge was on the phone with him the moment free agency started. Johnson should fit in with the scrappy Celtics squad that snuck into the 2015 NBA playoffs.
“I’ve watched Amir grow up in the NBA,’’ Ainge said at the introductory press conference. “He can really play. He’s a guy that, the score always seems to go in your favor when he’s on the court. He’s a guy that doesn’t necessarily fill up a stat sheet like a lot of players, but he is a winning player. He’s a guy that his teammates love playing with. He plays great defense, he rebounds, defends multiple positions and brings a lot of versatility.’’
He joins a crowded power forward group with Jared Sullinger, new trade acquisition David Lee, and 2015 draft pick Jordan Mickey.
