Witness Cleveland’s latest hope salute its last champ
Jim Brown is the last sports star to bring a championship to Cleveland. LeBron James aims to follow in his footsteps.
The last time Cleveland celebrated a sports title of any kind was in 1964 when the Browns beat the Baltimore Colts and won the NFL Championship.
Brown sat courtside to watch the first NBA Finals game in Cleveland since 2007 and only the third ever on Tuesday night. James, a native of Akron, Ohio, acknowledged Brown with a little bow.
“In Northeast Ohio, nothing is given,’’ James wrote in his homecoming essay in Sports Illustrated last summer. “Everything is earned. You work for what you have. I’m ready to accept the challenge. I’m coming home.’’
