Reports: Contract Talks Between JaVale McGee, Celtics Fall Through
UPDATE 2:25 p.m.:The Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett is reporting that JaVale McGee will not be joining the Celtics, as he and the team were unable to reach agreement on a contract. Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the disagreement was due to the Celtics wanting a team option for next season, while McGee wanted a player option.
ORIGINAL STORY: The Celtics are close to signing free agent big man JaVale McGee, who cleared waivers Wednesday after being bought out by the tanking 76ers.
ESPN’s Jeff Goodman was first to report the news, which Danny Ainge confirmed on Toucher and Rich Thursday morning.

McGee is a legitimate rim protector and a great athlete for a seven footer. The 27-year-old has been notorious for making some silly plays on the basketball court, but he could be the piece that puts Boston over the top in the race for the final playoff spot in the East.
The 2011-12 season was McGee’s best as a pro. He averaged 11.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 54% between Washington and Denver that season. He’s been injury prone since, playing just 28 total games since the start of the 2013-14 season.
