Westbrook Out at Least Four Weeks as Injury Woes Continue for Thunder
Things have gone from bad to worse for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Already without 2013-14 NBA MVP Kevin Durant for another month, the team announced on Saturday that point guard Russell Westbrook has undergone hand surgery and will miss at least four weeks.
The 25-year-old suffered the injury on Thursday in Oklahoma City’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, which was later diagnosed as a small fracture in his right hand.
Westbrook, who has played in two regular season games, scored 38 points with six assists and three rebounds in the Thunder’s season-opening loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Westbrook has averaged 20.1 points and 6.9 assists per game over his six-plus seasons in the NBA, and has been named to three All-Star teams.
Durant has been out since Oct. 13 after suffering a Jones fracture in his right foot during the practice in the preseason and was given a six-to-eight week timetable for recovery. The 26-year-old has averaged 27.4 points per game over his seven-year NBA career, is a five-time All-Star, and – along with Westbrook – led the Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2012.
The Thunder started the year 0-2 after going 59-23 in 2013-14. They have 15 games in the month of November where they will most likely be without both Westbrook and Durant; only six of those games, however, are on the road, including a Nov. 12 matchup with the Celtics at the TD Garden.
