It’s Decision Day on Phil Pressey

Phil Pressey’s contract with the Celtics this season becomes guaranteed if the team doesn’t waive him by midnight. My good friend Jay King reminded me of the deadline this morning on Twitter:
Today is Phil Pressey day. If the Celtics don’t waive him by midnight, his contract becomes guaranteed for this season.

Pressey played well for the Celtics during summer league last week in Orlando, averaging 10.6 points and 5.4 assists while being the team’s primary ball handler. He showed an ability to get to the rim and dish off to open teammates. Last season, Pressey averaged 2.8 points and 3.2 assists in 75 games for the Celtics. He made 11 starts.
Pressey has two years remaining on a three-year deal, but these last two are non-guaranteed. In my opinion Pressey has played his way onto the roster this season. The problem becomes one of numbers. When Avery Bradley makes his deal official Tuesday, the Celtics will have 17 players under contract. Chris Babb and Chris Johnson also have deals that are non-guaranteed, so they, along with Pressey, figure to be battling it out for a roster spot. Another trade or two could trim the roster before the summer ends.
