Boston Celtics

Wrote this a decade ago, on the 10-year anniversary of Reggie Lewis’s death.

Ten years beyond that, I think my last couple of lines still hold true, save for the distance from the tragedy:

There may be some like Reggie Lewis. But there will never be another.

Rest in peace, Reggie.

Ten years after you left us, we still don’t understand why you had to go.

Still miss him and think about the what-ifs often. God, was it that long ago already? Can’t believe he’d be 47 now. He’s eternally 27 in our eyes.

Those of you fortunate enough to watch him just begin to come into his own with the Celtics and in the community understand what was lost.

And for those of you for whom he’s just a tragic tale rather than a personal memory, I hear Comcast SportsNet New England’s documentary, which airs Sunday at 8 p.m., does him total justice.
