Something’s got to give

MIAMI — Celtics guard Ray Allen was out on the floor early at American Airlines Arena getting his shots up, and I had a chance to watch him from up close on the visitors’ bench. Allen took several corner 3-pointers, and from the bench it was striking just how much give there was in the floor. When Allen stepped forward, an entire panel of the floor shook, gave in a little, and then returned to form. A much larger man (think Glen Davis) could really make those floor boards shake.
Most NBA arenas have basketball floors that assemble in pieces to cover up an ice surface, event surface, and the like. The parquet floor at TD Garden is notorious for having dead spots. What fans at home probably don’t realize is that in some cases the floor of the gym at their local YMCA may be more sturdy than the floor many of the world’s best players play on every day.
