Davis takes responsibilty for 2d unit

Glen Davis wants to be a leader.

The Celtics’ second unit was outscored 31-24 in the 2d quarter of tonight’s win over the Nuggets, the only blemish on an otherwise easy win. The Nuggets shot 58 percent in the 2d quarter after shooting 38 percent in the 1st.

Davis says it’s his fault.

“I didn’t lead the second team good enough for just to keep that lead,” said Davis. “I need to adjust, I need to motivate, I need to do something out there. Because I’m the guy that makes the second team go.”

Davis leads the bench in playing time with 29.1 minutes per game. He mentioned himself and Nate Robinson as the leaders of the backups. It’s a somewhat surprising statement from a player who missed the first part of last season for doing something as stupid as punching a friend and breaking his hand, but the thing is, Davis is right.

He needs to lead.

“Me being the sixth man coming off the bench, I mirror the first team because I play a lot of minutes with the first team,” he said. “So I’ve got to somehow, someway get the same momentum from the first team and use it to transfer to the second team. I’m that connection.”

It’s hard to fault the current second unit too much. Davis, Nate Robinson, Marquis Daniels, Von Wafer, and Semih Erden didn’t play well as a group tonight, but Delonte West and Jermaine O’Neal are supposed to be here to help. Shaq may eventually join that group with the addition of Kendrick Perkins.
