Shaq makes pitch for Nets GM job

Two years.

Shaquille O’Neal promised Celtics fans two years during his introductory press conference with the team earlier this summer. Shaq says he’ll be done playing entirely after his deal with Boston is up.

Shaq’s next gig? How about NBA general manager. O’Neal told North Jersey.com that he’d like the New Jersey Nets to stay in, well, New Jersey, and that he’d like to ask Russian billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov for the front office job.

“Hopefully [Prokhorov will] stay and hopefully he’ll make me general manager because I will be available in 745 days,” said O’Neal.

Shaq is from Newark, N.J. spending the first 14 years of his life there. On the Nets’ move to Brooklyn, O’Neal said, “I don’t think the Nets need to go to Brooklyn. I love Jay-Z and all that, but we got a great owner, a great arena. Let’s keep it where it’s at. Not only that, I’m saving the owner money so he doesn’t have to pay another 300 million to build this new arena in Brooklyn.”

The Celtics are in Newark — where O’Neal has done a great deal of charity work — for a preseason game with the Nets at the glittering Prudential Center tonight.
