Wallace: Celtics ‘doing what they need to do’

The Celtics bench combined for 61 points tonight against the Pistons, with five players (Glen Davis, Rasheed Wallace, Nate Robinson, Michael Finley, and Marquis Daniels) combining for 55 of those points.

“Just playing basic basketball,” said Wallace. “Nothing too hard…[We’re ] just moving the ball. As Doc likes to say, ‘the hockey pass’. Setting it up for that next man to pass it to that next man for the bucket.”

The Celtics had 34 assists on 46 made baskets tonight, a sign that the ball was indeed moving well. The C’s tied their season-high for assists (they also had 34 against the Knicks on Feb. 23).

“We capitalized on assists and made the right plays down the stretch,” said Daniels. “Guys were finishing tonight. We were just getting the ball in the open spots.”

Said Wallace, “It’s just doing what we need to do. After that miserable display yesterday, we just had to come back strong and try to build on it from here, one game at a time, with the few we have left.”

  • The bench may have closed the game out, but Paul Pierce set the tone for the Celtics tonight against Detroit with 12 points in the first quarter.

“When Paul is aggressive like he is, there isn’t a forward in the world that could play him, a player whoever who could guard him,” said Kevin Garnett. “He’s hard to guard when he’s aggressive like that. He sets the tone not just for the offense, but for the defense also.”

  • Quote of the night comes from Pistons coach John Kuester.

“They were good, we were bad,” said Kuester. “They played an outstanding basketball game and we added to it.”
