Allen going to the inauguration
TD BANKNORTH GARDEN — Celtics guard Ray Allen said he will fly down to Washington, D.C. tonight in preparation for tomorrow’s presidential inauguration of Barack Obama. Allen said he has secured a hotel in walking distance of the events and hopes to wake up at 7 a.m. to beat the crowds and get a good spot. Allen secured tickets for the inauguration from congressman Tim Johnson of Illinois.
“I’m going to take a lot of pictures,” said Allen. “I’m sure the people in DC are seeing DC like they’ve never seen it before….It’s one thing to see it on TV but to see it on the ground, it will be good to bring back to my teammates and to my friends and family and show them what it is all about.”
The Celtics guard was able to secure the tough ticket, but he said he’s disappointed that his family won’t be able to come along. While he said he could have gotten tickets for them, Allen’s young son has diabetes, and the Allens didn’t want to risk taking him to the event with the restrictions on strollers and handbags that will be in effect.
“I don’t know how close or how far back I’ll be,” said Allen. “I’ll probably be closer than a 9-iron.”
