Report: Donaghy could name more
Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy will reportedly provide prosecutors with the names of up to 20 league officials he alleges were involved in gambling activity, according to a report on 1050 ESPN Radio in New York.
Donaghy pleaded guilty this week to felony charges of conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commerce. He also admitted to betting on games in which he officiated.
The NBA referees union insisted Friday that Donaghy is the only referee known to be involved in any kind of gambling activity, according to the Associated Press. NBA commissioner David Stern has repeatedly said Donaghy is the only official involved in the probe and has called Donaghy a “rogue, isolated criminal.”
The offenses Donaghy purports other officials to have made may not all be illegal and could include betting in casinos, according to the radio report. Those activities, if true, could still violate NBA policy and lead to the firings of the officials allegedly involved, the report said.
