The Boston Bruins bolstered their goalie depth on Sunday by bringing in the reigning Hockey East tournament MVP.
Boston announced that it signed Merrimack College goalie Max Lundgren to a one-year, entry-level contract for the 2026-27 season with an NHL cap hit of $952,500.
Lundgren, 23, told WBZ’s Dan Roche on Sunday that he expects to report to Providence at some point next week.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s a dream coming true,” Lundgren told Roche. “I mean, ever since I was a kid, I wanted to play in the NHL, and I’ve heard … that Boston is something special. This makes it even better to join the organization, and this makes me very excited.”
Lundgren — who hails from Angelholm, Sweden — is coming off a dominant season with the Warriors in 2025-26.
In 39 games this past season, Lundgren posted a 21-16-2 record with a 2.55 goals‑against average and a .920 save percentage. He set the single-season program record for saves in a season (1,134 in regular season), as well as the record for minutes played in a season (2,332-plus).
The 6-foot-5 netminder was at his best during the Warriors’ Cinderella run in the postseason — helping the eighth-seeded Merrimack win the Hockey East tournament for the first time in program history.
Lundgren took home tournament MVP honors for his efforts. After helping the Warriors beat UMass, 2-0, he became the first goalie to post a shutout in a Hockey East semifinal since Connor Hellebuyck.

He then stopped 49 shots against UConn in the Hockey East title game to punch Merrimack’s ticket to the NCAA tournament. Lundgren and the Warriors’ season came to an end on Thursday when they fell to North Dakota, 3-0, in the NCAA Regionals.
“I like to use my size to my advantage,” Lundgren said of his play style. “Play simple and make saves look easy rather than hard — and just being calm in net.”
Lundgren figures to slot into a crowded goalie depth chart in Providence alongside Michael DiPietro and Simon Zajicek moving forward.
A netminder who has thrived in the AHL ranks like DiPietro could earn another look with Boston next season, especially if the team wants to bring in a netminder who can challenge Joonas Korpisalo for the backup spot.
