Bruins trade for Oilers winger Viktor Arvidsson

Arvidsson does have five 20-goal seasons on his resume.

With the Bruins in need of some scoring punch, Don Sweeney and Boston pulled off a deal for a middle-six winger on Tuesday.

Boston announced just ahead of the start of free agency that they have acquired forward Viktor Arvidsson from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick.

With limited options available in free agency, Boston opted to take a flier on a veteran winger who could be a potential 20-goal contributor for a team that needs a shot-first option in place.

Avridsson, 32, is coming off of a season where he scored 15 goals and 27 points across 67 games with the Oilers.

The Swedish forward is a dangerous scoring threat off the rush who also peppers the net. Of the 596 NHLers last season who logged at least 500 minutes of even-strength ice time, Arvidsson ranked 19th with 9.57 shots per 60 minutes (per Natural Stat Trick).

Arvidsson has one year left on his contract, and will account for a $4 million cap hit.

He has been a productive forward in the NHL over the years, scoring 20 or more goals five times in his career. During his tenure with the Nashville Predators, Arvidsson scored 30-plus goals during the 2016-17 season (31 tallies) and 2018-19 (34 goals).

Arvidsson dealt with injuries during the 2023-24 season with the Kings — undergoing back surgery in October before latter getting hampered by a lower-body ailment. In 18 games, Arvidsson scored six goals and posted 15 points that season.

New Bruins head coach Marco Sturm has some history with Arvidsson, as he served as an assistant coach with the Kings over three seasons when Arvidsson was skating in a middle-six role with the team.

Arvidsson is likely best utilized in a third-line role at this stage of his career, but he could lined up for second-line reps on a Bruins team short on scoring threats.

According to @BruinsCapSpace, the Bruins now have $8.8 million in remaining cap space.
