Marco Sturm has a new assistant coach in place on his Bruins staff.
Boston announced on Friday that they have hired Steve Spott as an assistant coach. Spott, 57, has an extensive history working alongside Peter DeBoer — serving as his assistant across three different teams from 2015-25.
Spott first joined DeBoer’s NHL staff with the San Jose Sharks (2015-19) before moving on to the Golden Knights (2020-22) when DeBoer went to Las Vegas. Spott’s most recent stop was with the Dallas Stars over the last three seasons — helping Dallas earn three straight trips to the Western Conference Finals.
After Dallas made the call to fire DeBoer after falling to the Oilers for the second straight year, Spott opted to join the Bruins.
“I’m incredibly excited and honored to join the Boston Bruins organization,” Spott said in a release. “Being part of an Original Six franchise with such a proud history and tradition means a great deal to me and my family.
“The opportunity to work alongside Marco and the rest of this coaching staff, in front of one of the most passionate fan bases in hockey, is something I’m truly grateful for, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Spott ran Dallas’ power play during his three-year run with the Stars, with the club ranking seventh in power-play percentage (23.7 percent) over those last three seasons. Dallas’ power-play did dip down to 17th this past year (22.0 percent), but the Stars ranked sixth and fifth, respectively, in that same category during the 2023-24 and 2022-23 campaigns.
During his introductory press conference as Bruins head coach, Sturm shared his desire for Boston to bring in an assistant coach with power-play experience.
Boston’s power play labored extensively this past season, ranking 29th in the NHL with a 15.2 percent success rate.
“Steve is a passionate teacher, a strong communicator, and brings great structure and detail to everything he does,” Sturm said in a statement released by the Bruins. “His experience, especially on special teams, will be a major asset for our group and for the Bruins moving forward.”
A Colgate graduate, Spott now joins a Bruins coaching staff that also includes retained assistants in Jay Leach, Chris Kelly, and goalie coach Bob Essensa.
