Bruins reportedly trade Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs
Brandon Carlo had played all nine of his seasons in the NHL with the Bruins.
The Bruins are tearing things down.
Just a few minutes after the Bruins reportedly traded Brad Marchand to the Florida Panthers, Boston has reportedly dealt defenseman Brandon Carlo to another Atlantic Division rival in the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, the Bruins are acquiring forward Fraser Minten and a first-round pick back from Toronto as part of the deal.
Given Carlo’s age (28), the security provided by his contract (signed next two years at $4.1 million) and his value as a right-shot, top-four D — it was expected for Boston to net a solid return for the D-man.
Minten, 20, is considered Toronto’s top prospect. The 38th pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, Minten has already played 19 games up at the NHL with the Maple Leafs — scoring two goals and adding a pair of assists.
Much like a few other players the Bruins have acquired over the last 24 hours like Marat Khusnutdinov, Minten’s calling card lies in his skating, work ethic and pace — with the young forward projected to be a middle-six regular in the NHL ranks in due time.
Carlo has been a stalwart on the Bruins’ blue line for close to a decade — with the 6-foot-5 defenseman appearing in 617 career games with Boston during his NHL career. Carlo has appeared in 63 games with Boston this season, scoring a goal and adding eight assists while averaging 18:48 of ice time per contest.
With Carlo now dealt, upgrading the right side of Boston’s defense stands as yet another offseason endeavor that Don Sweeney and the Bruins must address this offseason.
