Watch: Bruins’ Jesper Boqvist beats Sergei Bobrovsky for OT game-winner
Boston has played 26 games beyond regulation this season.
The Bruins certainly aren’t strangers to overtime this season, but they kept their win streak alive on Saturday evening.
An unlikely hero potted the game-winner to maintain Boston’s four-game winning streak winding down the regular season.
Jesper Boqvist found himself on a partial breakaway after winning a puck battle against the boards. Skating up center ice and into the offensive zone, Boqvist had enough speed to protect the puck on his forehand and fire it over Florida Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky’s shoulder to light the lamp.
It was Boston’s 26th overtime contest of the season.
Boqvist is in his fifth year in the NHL and first with the Bruins. He only had five goals on the season coming into Saturday, and though he’s been a serviceable bottom-six forward, he isn’t known for the big-time playmaking he showcased in the OT frame.
Jim Montgomery wanted to see Boston maintain its intensity through the regular season despite having clinched a postseason berth over a week ago. A four-game winning streak with four regular season games left seems to indicate that message was received in the locker room.
Boston will search for a fifth straight win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. The Bruins beat Carolina 4-1 when the teams played on Thursday.
